The project is supported by the Democratic Commission on the US Embassy.

Start negotiating

From the beginning of 2006 to the end of 2007, MilenijuM successfully implemented the project “Start negotiating” whose goal is to promote intercultural dialogue as well as active civic education. Young people and students included in this project had the opportunity to solve problems between governments in the area of Serbia – Kosovo – Macedonia, that is, in the area of Western Balkans, in the second year of the project’s implementation, through negotiation simulations and the process of democratic decisionmaking. Three international and 4 local simulations of international negotiations were held, as well as a series of meetings and training sessions for students of the University of Sarajevo, Podgorica, Tirana, Pristina, Tirana, Tetovo, Skopje, and Nis.

During the two years of the project, over 1000 students were registered while 224 students took part in the simulations, who through real simulations negotiated the topics of Cultural heritage of the Balkans, Freedom of Movement, and other current topics.

This project is supported by the Open Society Fund, the Olof Palme International Center and the Balkan Democracy Fund.

Start your career

From June 2006 to the first half of 2007, MilenijuM implemented the project “The first step towards a career – preparing graduates for entering the labor market”. The project was realized within the framework of the Active Labor Market Measures Fund of the Employment Support Program in Serbia, which is implemented by the European Agency for Reconstruction in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy of the Republic of Serbia and the National Employment Service. The goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of unemployment among young people, preparing high school graduates to enter the labor market in the municipalities of the city of Belgrade, Bor, and Pirot districts.

A total of 4832 students underwent a one-day training on active job search techniques, CV writing, simulated interviewing with an employer, and were introduced to the Labor Law and the way the National Employment Service works.

The training was conducted by a team of trainers who specially gathered and trained MilenijuM for this type of workshop work. By the end of 2006, the training team held 345 one-day workshops in 40 secondary schools. The complete training is presented in the brochure “Your first step towards a career”, which was distributed to all participants of the one-day training.

After the complete training, the students visited some of the companies that work in their municipality in order to get to know the economic situation and verify in practice through the simulation of the acquired skills.

The results of the project “The first step towards a career” were presented at the conference “The importance of non-formal education in solving the problem of youth unemployment”.

The future of civil society in Serbia

In early 2006, the MilenijuM Center for Civil Society Development opened a public debate on this issue at a round table held at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade. At the beginning of 2008, we started implementing the project of the same name with the involvement of the general public from different parts of the Republic of Serbia.

The general purpose of the project is the long-term development of a strong and stable democratic society and a vital civil sector with the active participation of citizens. During the implementation of the project, a series of round tables will be held in 8 cities: Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad, Subotica, Kragujevac, Zaječar, Novi Pazar, and Vranje, where an open and constructive exchange of ideas, views and concrete proposals for future development and value enhancement will be initiated. modern civil society, because only a strong and stable civil society can influence the strengthening of the rule of law, democracy, and the stabilization of the political system based on decisions made by citizens.

Through the implementation of the “Future of Civil Society in Serbia” project, we will try to change the high level of social apathy, which is reflected in the low level of civic participation and connection with political processes, as well as to repair the ties between citizens and civil society organizations as representatives of their interests, but also the level cooperation between civil society and the Government.

EU za tebe

EU 4 YOU

In 2010, MilenijuM implemented the EU 4 U project. Through the project and its activities, MilenijuM pointed out the needs of young people in the process of Serbia’s integration into the European Union. The simulation of the work of the European Parliament was an excellent opportunity for 80 young people from 8 municipalities from different parts of Serbia to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the European Union, the process of European integration, and the work of the institutions of the European Union. MilenijuM will also increase the visibility of young people’s views and opinions about the European Union, the process of European integration, and Serbia’s accession to the European Union through the preparation, printing, and distribution of a book of essays on the topic of Serbia in 2014. A book of essays by young people as project participants wrote, was a channel for communication with authorities and political parties, as well as 1000 copies of the book that were distributed and enabled their opinions and views to be heard by decision-makers in Serbia.

Also, 15 young people from Serbia were educated at the training for trainers with the aim of empowering and strengthening their capacities so that they could act as peer educators and hold various simulations of the work of the European Union institutions to their peers. The young people who participated in the training, in addition to their knowledge and understanding of the European Union and the process of European integration, were additionally empowered with skills and knowledge of experiential learning techniques to ensure the sustainability and development of long-term activities.
